Cost of Living: Australia vs the UK
Almost every comparison of Australian and British living costs makes the same mistake: it puts an Australian dollar figure next to a pound figure and calls the difference a pay rise. At the July 2026 rate of roughly AUD 1.90 to the pound, that error inflates Australian salaries by about 90%. This page converts everything, and the answer that falls out is far more useful than the one you will read elsewhere.
Quick answer
Converted at AUD 1.90 to the pound, Australian salaries are not uniformly higher — the gap depends almost entirely on your occupation. A registered nurse gains roughly 30%. A software engineer gains around 18%. A civil engineer gains almost nothing. Living costs run somewhere between 3% and 25% higher depending on whose index you believe, with groceries clearly more expensive and rent varying enormously by city. The genuine structural advantage is superannuation: a 12% employer contribution against the UK's 3% auto-enrolment minimum, which is worth more to most people than the salary difference.
Why most of these comparisons are wrong
Search for this topic and you will find pages stating that Australian software engineers earn two to three times their British counterparts. They do not. That claim comes from setting an Australian salary of AUD 105,000–130,000 against a British one of £50,000–55,000 and comparing the numbers rather than the money.
One pound bought about 1.90 Australian dollars at the end of July 2026. Convert first, and AUD 105,000–130,000 becomes £55,000–68,000 — meaningfully more than £50,000–55,000, but nothing like double.
The second error is comparing gross salaries when the tax systems differ structurally, and the third is ignoring superannuation entirely. Both are covered below, and the second one moves the answer in Australia's favour.
The conversion
At roughly AUD 1.90 to the pound, an Australian salary of $105,000–130,000 is £55,300–68,400 — not the £105,000–130,000 that a straight digit-for-digit comparison implies. Every claim that Australians earn two to three times UK salaries comes from skipping this step.
The same job, in the same currency
Every Australian figure below is converted at AUD 1.90 to the pound. Salary data for both countries varies by source, so these are mid-range published figures rather than precise averages — treat the direction and the size of each gap as the finding, not the individual number.
| Occupation | Australia (AUD) | Converted | United Kingdom | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Registered nurse | $83,000 – $103,000 | £43,700 – £54,200 | £29,970 – £44,962 | about +31% |
| Software engineer | $105,000 – $130,000 | £55,300 – £68,400 | £50,262 – £55,000 | about +18% |
| Mechanical engineer | around $83,600 | around £44,000 | £40,000 – £45,000 | about +4% |
| Civil engineer | around $85,000 | around £44,700 | around £44,920 | roughly level |
What this means if you are an engineer
It means the move has to justify itself on something other than pay. A civil engineer moving from the UK to Australia is, on published averages, earning about the same money in a country where groceries cost more. That is not an argument against going — the weather, the space and the career opportunities are real — but it is an argument against budgeting for a pay rise that will not arrive.
Nurses are the opposite case. A roughly 30% uplift against NHS bands is large enough to change what a household can afford, and it compounds with the superannuation difference below — our guide for nurses covers the registration path that unlocks it. If you are weighing the move on financial grounds, your occupation matters far more than the country-level averages everyone quotes.
Superannuation is the part nobody mentions
Australian employers pay compulsory superannuation of 12% on top of your salary. UK auto-enrolment requires a minimum employer contribution of 3%, with 5% from the employee.
On an AUD 100,000 salary — about £52,600 — that is roughly £6,300 a year going into your retirement savings from your employer. The UK equivalent on the same converted salary would be about £1,600. The difference of roughly £4,700 a year does not appear in any salary comparison, and for most people it is worth more than the headline pay gap.
This is why comparing gross salaries understates the Australian position even after currency conversion. If you are comparing offers, compare total package.
Tax: no National Insurance, but a Medicare levy
Australia has no equivalent of National Insurance. Income tax for 2026–27 runs through brackets of 0%, 15%, 30%, 37% and 45%, with the second and third bands scheduled to fall to 15% and 29%. On top of that sits a Medicare levy of 2% of taxable income for most people.
The UK charges income tax at 20%, 40% and 45% above a £12,570 personal allowance, plus National Insurance at 8% between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above that. The absence of an NI-equivalent at that rate is the main reason Australian take-home pay compares better than the gross figures suggest.
One specific trap worth knowing if you are a higher earner: the UK's personal allowance tapers away between £100,000 and £125,140, producing an effective marginal rate of about 60% across that band. Australia has no equivalent cliff — its marginal rates progress smoothly.
What actually costs more in Australia
Sources disagree on the headline number more than you would expect. Cost-of-living aggregators put Australia around 3% above the UK on a comparable basket, while several relocation guides claim 10–25%. That spread mostly reflects which cities are being compared and whether rent is included, and it is a good reason to ignore national averages and look at the specific components.
- Groceries are consistently more expensive — roughly 10–15% on a like-for-like basket, and the index-level gap between Sydney or Melbourne and the UK national figure is wider still.
- Rent depends entirely on which cities you compare. A three-bedroom apartment outside central Sydney is broadly comparable to its London equivalent, sometimes cheaper. But UK regional cities such as Manchester and Birmingham are clearly cheaper than Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide — so if you are leaving a regional UK city rather than London, expect rent to rise.
- Public transport is surprisingly competitive, and in places cheaper. Queensland's 50-cent flat fare, introduced in 2025 and extended into 2026, has no British equivalent.
- Healthcare costs differ in kind rather than degree. Medicare is not the NHS, and most Australians carry some private cover — see how Medicare works and what health insurance actually costs, including a deadline that catches migrants over 31.
- Housing purchase may not be open to you at first. Foreign persons — which generally includes temporary visa holders — were barred from buying established dwellings for two years from 1 April 2025. Which city you choose changes this arithmetic more than any other decision.
How to work out your own answer
The national comparison is close to meaningless for an individual. Four numbers decide your position, and you can get all four in an afternoon:
- Your occupation's Australian salary range in the specific city you are targeting, not the national figure.
- That figure converted at today's rate, plus 12% superannuation, against your current package including employer pension.
- Take-home rather than gross, using both countries' current brackets — the structural difference favours Australia more than the gross numbers show.
- Rent for the suburb you would realistically live in, against what you pay now. This is the number that most often decides whether the move works financially.

Frequently asked questions
Is Australia more expensive than the UK?
On a comparable basket, modestly — estimates range from about 3% to 25% depending on the source and which cities are compared. Groceries are clearly more expensive, public transport can be cheaper, and rent depends entirely on the comparison: central Sydney against London is close, but Brisbane or Perth against Manchester or Birmingham is not.
Do Australians really earn double what people earn in the UK?
No, and this claim comes from comparing Australian dollar figures with pound figures without converting. At roughly AUD 1.90 to the pound in July 2026, the gap ranges from about 31% for nurses to essentially nothing for civil engineers. Your occupation matters far more than the country.
How much is superannuation worth compared with a UK pension?
Australian employers contribute 12% of salary on top of your pay; UK auto-enrolment requires 3% from the employer. On a salary of about £52,600 that is roughly £6,300 a year against £1,600 — a difference of about £4,700 annually that never appears in a salary comparison and is often worth more than the pay gap itself.
Will my take-home pay be better in Australia?
Usually yes, and by more than the gross figures suggest, because Australia has no National Insurance equivalent — the Medicare levy is 2% against UK NI at 8% across most of the earnings range. Higher earners should also note the UK's effective 60% marginal band between £100,000 and £125,140, which Australia has no equivalent of.
Which Australian city is cheapest for a UK migrant?
Adelaide and Perth are materially cheaper than Sydney and Melbourne on housing, which is the component that decides most household budgets. Both also happen to be classified as regional for skilled migration, so the same choice can improve your visa position — see our Western Australia and South Australia guides.
